Our reason for serving others is simple and based upon “The Great Commission” in Matthew 28: 18-20:
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Compassion Child & World Help
We are thrilled to support Usamara, a young girl from Brazil, through Compassion Child International, and Rahul Deepak, a young boy from India, through World Help. Our support for Usamara and Rahul is provided each week through an offering taken up during our Fountain worship time, our youth worship experience, on Sunday nights. We keep up with them through letters and packages all throughout the year and consider ourselves blessed to have this opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child.
Summer Mission Trips
Our summers would not be complete without our Summer Mission Trips. Since 2002 our Student Mission Teams have served in Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, as well as in Panama and Costa Rica - who knows where we’ll go next. Separate trips are scheduled for our Senior High and Junior High students each year and usually occur sometime in June and July.
Annual Mission Projects
Student mission opportunities are endless within our ministry so you should never be at a loss for being the hands and feet of Jesus. Following is a list of yearly mission projects in which we participate. Check our calendar for exact dates and times:
Sound off for Poverty is an event that challenges students to participate in a Media Fast while being educated about poverty in America and in the Wiregrass area, putting their faith into action through service to the community, and "turning up the volume" onto the needs of the poor.
YEW (Youth Encounter Week) kicks off our Summer mission projects whereby we spend time during the first week of summer helping out local community service organizations. We continue in our acts of service throughout the summer through our Summer Mission Trips.
This month we partner with a local retirement home to share a meal with their residents and challenge them to a board game of their choice. This time allows our youth the chance to pick up bits of wisdom from those more experienced than they are, while bringing lots of joy to those living at the home.
To show our support for the Wiregrass Area Food Bank, we embark upon a Neighborhood Food Drive each Fall. On a designated Sunday afternoon, we load buses and cars armed with brown bags to deliver area neighborhoods. The bags are dropped off at each resident’s doorstep with a request to fill the bag with non-perishable items that we will pick up the following Sunday. Our community has responded so well to this effort and each year we have donated over 1,500 lbs of food to the Wiregrass Area Food Bank.
As several Wiregrass nonprofit groups hold their annual walk/run fundraisers during this time, Covenant Youth are quick to help out. We currently assist with the Champions of Hope Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser and the Wiregrass Area Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome.
December is loaded with mission opportunities with the local Salvation Army. From toy and food sorting to assisting with their distribution, to ringing the Salvation Army bell at Wiregrass Commons Mall, we are always humbled by the people and lives that we encounter. We also assist with the local Santa for Seniors project organized by the Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging.
